Santa Claus

Rem told me this morning that Santa Claus was "going" to town to buy her presents and then give them to me to wrap and put under the tree for her!  This came from the song Santa Claus is coming to town and me letting her help me wrap presents.  She made me laugh when she said this but it also got me thinking. She is so confused about this jolly old man named Santa.
Keaton and I decided that we weren't going to teach our kids about Santa so when the topic comes up we just tell her that he is a symbol or pretend.  We really only bring him up if she does and now that she is a bit older and others are telling her things about Santa  I can see her confusion.  I feel bad and a bit Scrooge like but I really would like to just focus on what this holiday is really about.
She is still so young and even though I say the words I don't think she is getting them.  So I am now looking for ways to do this better.  Do I just ignore it until she's a bit older and can understand better or are there things I can say that will help her to understand now.  Are there magic words that I don't know?

Santa is such a hard subject. For my boys I just decided to wait until they asked if he was real, then I told them the truth. However I never ever mentioned Santa Clause so it wasn't until Michael was about 4 years old that he had his first run in with Santa at a Costco. Santa asking Michael to sit on his lap kind of freaked him out. I have been feeling a little guilty lately about not giving my kids "the magic of Christmas" but after I went and asked what they would have preferred they said they were really glad I didn't lie to them. I don't know-some of my sisters do Santa and their kids love it. But my kids love Christmas too and I have tried to make it a really fun time of the year. Good luck with Rem. You're her mom so you know what is best!
